about

“I know it’s late to be in touch...”

Following on from the acclaimed debut album, The Distance Between Heart and Mouth, Touch Sensitive proudly presents new music from Elaine Howley.

‘Live As I Saw It’ was created for the soundtrack of director Charlie Joe Doherty’s short film, ‘This Years Lull’. Written by Charlie & Gabriel Paschal Blake, the film is one of three shorts in the Dream Baby Dream project commissioned by the Regional Cultural Centre Letterkenny & Foggy Notions.
‘Live As I Saw It’ is an intimate and pulsing vignette written from the point of view of a young boy racer as he navigates his mourning and sense of belonging in a coastal abyss.

Elaine and Charlie were in conversation early in the filmmaking process:
“Hearing Charlie Joe’s vision for ‘This Years Lull’, I immediately felt an affinity with life growing up in a rural setting; spending time in cars, having long conversations, sharing dreams and listening to music. Charlie spoke of drives in Donegal with Gabriel soundtracked by the likes of Grouper; this type of tender, dense sound balancing with the idea of loud engines, burning rubber and acceleration.”

“Smoking, imagining, where I’ll run...”

On ‘Live As I Saw It’, Elaine lulls us into the twilight, rooting us with a heavy four-on-the-floor heartbeat kick drum and warm tape hiss. Around us, dancing ghosts of synthesisers and loops flicker in and out of earshot.

“I wanted to capture the film’s isolated setting within the sound; keeping the elements minimal while adding detail using tape loops and a focused vocal. The tune is sung from the point of view of the main character, Bambi, who is dedicated to his vision and the escape that his car represents. He drives into the night. The road is his sanctuary - a place he chooses to go irrespective of the pressures put on him to quit it or the loss he has endured. As he tears off, he keeps the memory of his friend Paddy close.”

"There are so many things that I will never say..."
